Beneath the Bones: Giant Pacific Octopus
Просмотров 3388 месяцев назад
Happy Halloween! Revisit this encounter from 2012 when the arms of a large octopus appear over a forensic research experiment deployed at 300m depth in the Strait of Georgia. The experiment holds the bones of a dead pig that was deployed to support forensic research. While the cage kept out the sharks, prawns gathered to pick over the bones. The octopus attempts to capture one of the prawns (ca...

These are inner coast Biggs Killer Whales (orcas). This one-minute sample of calls are from nearly an hour of inner coast Biggs orca calls recorded on ONC's Ocean Sonics icHF hydrophone deployed at 95m depth at the Saanich Inlet node. These calls are unusual in that Biggs orcas are usually silent and orcas rarely venture into Saanich Inlet. Check out ONC's website for more audio: www.oceannetwo...

if you experience these sounds when you are diving underwater, it can literally melt your brain because it emits 235 decibels of sound… even just 200 decibels can rupture your lungs and eardrums… 210 decibels can first make your brain hemorrhage and slowly turn to mush… any of this can happen even if you are many miles away from the active sonar because sounds travel better underground. if you want to learn more about this, please check out the video titled “the last sound you hear” by MR SLAV.

Transmitting multiple pings including one FMCW (frequency modulated continuous wave) and another CW with a relatively higher frequency. The faint fades in the tail of both FMCW and CW are the effects of reverberation (ocean is like a box so the reflection from surface and/or seabed are called reverberation that is how it differs from echo!), this tail fades away (after couple of reflection, reflecting again and again and the acoustic energy is absorbed) by time. I've observed a third signal, notably higher in frequency compared to these two. It does not have harmonics as these two FMCW and CW have harmonics (look at the frequency range between 6-7 kHz). That leads me to believe this third signal is an echo reflected from a moving object, the Doppler shift, suggesting the object is moving toward the transmitter.
